I ran into that problem many times trying to get a job in public relations. I managed to save up enough money so that I could take a summer off and just volunteer. Someone in the office quite, and since I'd been doing the job they hired me. Had I just applied as a stranger I would have never been considered.

Try asking former teachers if they know anyone who needs an assistant or an intern. You may even find a placement that does pay a little. Otherwise, try volunteering during the day and working in the evening if you need income. It will suck at first but it's the best way to get into a tight job market and to get some good references.

Good luck!

For finding a job a relevant job experience is better. I say this because yes high GPA's show that your smart, but it doesn't show that you have good work ethics and are reliable. I would also try to keep the GPA up to show you are good in academic area also.

Sounds like you need an attitude check.

Are you attempting to persuare a prospective employer you would fit in and learn quickly? Are you?
