Among Hall Of Famers, Ruth's 60 (1927) is the top mark in Major League Baseball.

Gibson is credited with seasons of 69, 75, and 84, but these totals were built in both league sanctioned games and exhibition (barnstorming) games, so make of that what you will.

Ruth's 60 are the major league record for a hall of famer still.

Maris was never inducted into the hall.

As someone else pointed out, Josh Gibson had seasons of much more, and went to the Hall in 1972.

Bond's 73, as well as Sosa's 60+ and McGwire's 70 are questioned due to steroid allegations and rumors of performance enhancing drug use.

And Maris's 61 actually used to be marked with an asterisk, because it took more games than Ruth's 60 did.

Babe Ruth. Maris, McGwire, Sosa, and Bonds aren't in the Hall (yet). Ruth hit 60.
Maris' 61 were questioned because his season had more games than Ruth's did. McGwire, Sosa and Bonds are all suspected of steroid use. Ruth was only suspected of beer, whiskey, and hotdog use.
