They will lobby for bills that support the rights of retired citizens. Also, many places give discounts to members. If you travel much the membership fees will soon pay for themselves while you are on the road.

It isn't worth it for us to belong since we don't travel much and when we do, we ask for the corporate rate. Tell them you shouldn't need to belong to a "club" if they are offering discounts by age if you qualify.Unless they are getting kickbacks from AARP. They do sell one thing for sure. They sell your name, e-mail address and about anything else they can to anyone willing to buy their list. As long as you are a member, you will get offers from tons of places. Even if you quit, you will have to specify you want off their lists and then it will take months. They have done a great job creating a large organization to employ people at pretty good salaries that YOU get to pay for. I never wanted in it so didn't belong and I finally got my wife to drop it last month. They have a tendency to bill you about 3 times a year.

Yikes, you don't have to worry about joining the AARP - they'll come after you! You watch, as son as you hit about 45, they start mailing you stuff and will even call if they can get your number.

Check out their website for full details. Basically, it depends on what you are interested in getting out of it. As some have mentioned there are political actions that they take on behalf of older people, there are travel and insurance benefits, and there is a monthly publication that has lots of useful information.

They fill my mailbox with paper to start fires with in the stove. I'm sure it keep the post mistress in her job. I pay a monthly dues for something I never collect on. I suppose there are more that I can't think of right now.
