I just went to my math class and we we took an exam worth a lot of points this morning. Aynhow, this lady in our class took her one or two year old child into the class in his stroller. The child apparently had a fever or something. The professor permitted her to take the exam inside the classroom with her young child in the classroom as well. She has let other children in this classroom before. I do not think childrenare allowec in a college class. Is this unacceptable in a college class?

It should be. It's distracting to the others there and in this case in particular exposes them to illness. However, some parents have emergencies that cannot be avoided. So if this was a seperate situation and for some reason, the student and the prof could not come to a better arrangement, it should not be a problem if the child is not crying. Since the professor has done this several times, it makes me wonder why she would. Perhaps she are bogged done with work and cannot make arrangements for students who have emergencies such can be the nature of the beast in higher ed...Just pointing out that sometimes what looks unacceptable and inexcusable to us is actually reasonable due to circumstances we are not aware of.

I think its in bad form... but unless the child is causing a severe disturbance it should be accepted on an emergency basis. You need to consider that it is ten times more difficult to juggle college when you have a good. Although the professor should have just let her take the exam at another time or miss the class....

I think it is okay as long as the teacher gives permission. This has happened in a few of my classes and it never seemed to be a big deal. Everybody has emergencies and as long as the child doesn't act up I don't see a problem with it.

It is generally up to the instructor.

They will likely only say no if there is a problem with the child's behavior.

Sounds like the mother didn't have much choice, sitters don't like to care for sick children and there was that big test . . .

I think as long as they are not a distraction to others, and by that I mean, noise and such.
