Yes, you can, but they are not easy to pluck out. I just moved my hostas this weekend and gave them to my neighbor in exchange for his peonies. Just get a pitch fork and start digging. I'm not kidding, they're very root-ey and pretty heavy, but they are SO durable ...I dont' think you can kill 'em :) Peonies are also just fine. Jsut make sure that the soil you're putting them into is well drained etc....but they're both very hardy plants w/good soil/light tolerance. Hostas are great in shady areas, but peonies ilke light.

You can move hostas any time, anywhere, anyway you like, they are extremely hardy.
Peonies on the other hand do not like being moved at any time of year, they are very sensitive. Even doing it right, and being careful they will still take a year or two to fully recover. I don't move them unless there is no other option, and if you have to move them, do it in the fall.

I know you can move the hostas. Just make sure you take a little dirt with them. I dug some up and they are growing on top of the ground. I am going to split up the roots and spread them a little.

I move hostas all the time. Try to avoid moving them in the heat of summer, but they're very tough plants.
Peonies are not. If you're going to move them, do it in the fall. They don't particularly like being moved and will probably suffer some if you do. It will take them a couple of years to really get going again.

Yes to both - it is actually good to separate & move early in the season. You may not get good growth & flowers the first year, but you will the second.
