Hitler went to prison for being a major instigator in the Bavarian putsch of 1923. He was found guilty of treason and sentenced to five years but served less than a year on account of good behavior. It is there where he dictated Mein Kampf.

Hitler was never imprisoned for his WW2-era misdeeds, but he did some prison time after he tried to seize power in the 1920s. The attempted coup failed, and Hitler was arrested for high treason. He was sentenced to five years in prison, but was pardoned and released after serving only nine months of his sentence.

Are you talking about the Munich Putsch?
Hitler tried to take over the Bavarian Government, citing insurrection in 1923. Didn't get too far.
