I got an e-mail from someone claiming to be a cop telling me not to talk with someone I've spoke to for over a year (but have never met in person). Has anyone else gotten this before? And if so, was it real or someones sick idea of a joke?

I dont think it was a joke... Beware! He is prolly looking out for YOUR safety... There are a lot of sick sick people in this world, and he is trying to make it safer! I would obey the law, and watch your e-mail.. because they may track it to you or even worse him.. and you could find out some disturbing news about him...

If you're really concerned, print the e-mail and take it to your local police department and explain the situation. They will be able to tell you better than anyone if it was a real cop talking to you. I have my suspicions that it wasn't a real cop, but then again I haven't seen the e-mail so I don't know. Did it contain a name, badge number, precinct, contact info, etc? If it contained none of those things, I doubt it's a cop. And as others may have said, ALWAYS BE AWARE of what you're writing, posting, etc on the internet. Good luck!

I can understand why you would be freaked. But it wouldnt strike me as being real. At any rate, I would NOT meet (in person) ANYONE you've met only online. If you have a name and address I'd check both out with the authorities to ensure that you're NOT dealing with a nut case. ALWAYS be aware of your surroundings.

I do know that impersonating a cop via Internet or in any way is a serious crime. Didn't they leave an e-mail address or some way for you to respond to verify?
