Zinc!!! Take it when you feel a cold coming on. I take 50 mg morning and night for 3 days...then you need to take a day off...I don't remember exactly why...it has to do with inhibiting your body's ability to absorb other nutrients like iron, etc. Then take another 3 day regimen. Do this until the cold is gone.
Also, I rinse my nose with a salt water solution. Get one of those Mucus suckers that you use on babies and fill it with salt water. squirt it up each nostril and it rinses the mucus outt of your sinuses and nose.
Also, Mucinex (sp?) is a great over the counter med. for breaking up mucus in your sinuses which allows it to drain.
Hope you feel better and I hope your conference is bearable!
P.S. sleep as much as possible and drink lots of fluids!

Well, I don't have a cure per se, but I've found that once I get a cold, if I take double doses of a daily vitamin & drink tons of orange juice, I can cut off about 2 days being sick. As far as not getting one in the first place?? Stay hydrated, get plenty of rest, & either wash your hands frequently or keep some anti-bacterial hand gel with you, and use it...

Bigelow's Plantation Mint Tea, hot, with lots of sugar and about 3 fingers of Jack Daniels Black Label (aka Jackblack, before the actor got into it). For sure, you'll sleep it off, and even if it don't work so well, you will enjoy the cold!
Or snark a bunch of DayQuil, if you need to be sober for the conference...NyQuil at night. I prefer the tea and jack, but chacun a son gout!

There's been a couple times that I had a cold, and drank a beer and it made me feel 10 times better. No Joke! Gargling with Whisky can also help with a sore throat

try drinking a little bit of whiskey, boil a pot of water and hold your face over the steam, also drink some hot tea and keep tylenol on hand and take a couple every 4 to 6 hours! And when you aren't working, in meetings, etc. rest, rest, and more rest! (also, another over the counter remedy you can try in addition to the other stuff I mentioned is buy this stuff called airborne-many people swear by it!)

Here's a mortuary trick. Thread some string through a needle, slip the needle between the ring and your finger and tie the string around the ring. Then pull, hard. It should slip right off.

Well, honey and whiskey soothes a sore throat.....and it does work. Also, Zicam has really worked for me. It lessens the duration and severity of a cold.
Good luck!
