I'm almost 37 weeks pregnant and thus far have had a fairly easy pregnancy (not to brag or anything...), but today, while walking my usual 2 blocks to and from work, I had a sudden sharp pain in my lower belly. I've had a dull ache there before (Braxton Hicks) but this one caused me to stop walking completely. When I tried to walk again, I couldn't because the pain was so intense. For about 5 minutes afterwards, I had to walk very slowly, clutching my stomach. What was that and is it something to worry over? I see my doctor next Tuesday, btw. Thanks for your help!

A full term pregnancy is around 40 weeks and can go up to 42 weeks. I thought this was common knowledge? My baby's lungs are still developing at this point!

I wouldn't worry about it unless you have any other symptoms that could indicate a problem. But it sounds like it's either a contraction, your pelvic bones moved, or the baby hit a nerve. You're at term, so any pain is normal and not really necessary to worry about unless you have any complications, which would've been diagnosed already. If you are really worried, then call your doctor to put your mind at ease, your doctor would have a better idea of what happened anyway since he or she has been monitoring your pregnancy. Even an on call nusrse in your doctor's office can help you. Good luck and congrats on the new addition arriving soon!

It could be your joints loosening up to get ready for the grand entrance...Your body has a chemical that it releases which loosens up your joints to make childbirth easier on your body. I forget what it is called but it does its jobs. Do the pains come and go? Have you tried to time them if they do come and go? Labor does feel differently to everyone. I never felt 1 single contraction with any of my children. It was all excruciating back labor but I have a friend whose contractions she said felt like menstrual cramps.....Everyone is different. Can't hurt to get checked...

I think I had the same problem when I was pregnant, and it scared me half to death. My doctor told me it was your pelvic bones/ligaments/tendons/etc stretching themselves out to prepare for labor. It happens occasionally, but shouldn't be happening constantly. Check with your doctor to make sure. But if it's the same thing I'm remembering from my own pregnancy, you have no reason to worry.

This could have been a pre-labor contraction. Your body will do some practice runs before the real deal starts.

- Also, 37 weeks would put you at over 9 months, are you past due?

I would say the baby is sitting on a nerve. But you could call your doctor and find out if everything is ok. Just call the office and ask one of the nurses. Hope everything is ok:) and congrats!

You might be working on a hernia. Nothing to worry about really, but if that's what it is, it'll have to be fixed later on. I waited til my baby was 7 months old to do mine, and then it came back 15 years later. :( Not life threatening but yucky to look at!
