I was a teller for about 2 years. It was really different between the different branches. One branch was downtown right across the street from the state capitol. Tons of attorneys just cashing checks, extremely boring. Another branch was in the middle of the UW Madison campus. Different things with every customer coming to my window, but a little overwhelming on some days (400 transactions in one 8-hour shift) with hundreds of $25 withdrawals.

A teller needs to know a little bit about everything that the bank/credit union does. He or she is the first line of customer service but is usually paid a very low wage. It is a good step into a financial institution.

Good Luck!

It is a very demanding job. The pay isn't that much but the fringe benefit package is very good. A good bank is involved in professional associations for the banking industry and it is possible to take night courses in banking. It is an entry level job, and if you are on the ball you can move up.

Tellers are the contact most people have with banks, so keep yourself in a good mood and try to get the clients to come back.

It's a great way to start a career in the financial industry! Keep it light, and have a good time. Being a teller will lead you to many opportunities for you in the future. Just do your best, follow the rules, and the rest will take care of itself. Be careful of the people who try to scam banks, they are out there.

I worked as a banker a long time ago, mostly in operations and auditing.
Being a teller isn't very hard. Many people enjoy it. Be friendly to all, practice your smile, ask the operations officer or head teller if you have doubts.
