The emphasis here is on "ex." It depends on why you two are no longer together. If the relationship ended amicably and you both mutually decided to move on with your lives, it is understandable if either one of you feels comfortable enough to ask favors of the other. However, if the end of the relationship was not an agreeable one on both sides, maybe you need to let sleeping dogs lie, so to speak. Don't start something that you don't intend to see through until the end. I read somewhere, I believe in a book by TD Jakes, that you nurture what you want in your life and you starve what you don't want in it. It's up to you...if you want this person, with whatever comes with them back in your life or not. It's easy to say, I'm just going to help them out this time, and they're going to pay me back. You've just opened a door. Decide what it is you want. Money always carries an attachment with it...because you're always going to be communicating about the return of it.

First, are there any children? If so, then you need to be supporting them. Get an attorney and get that hashed out.
If not children, then it doesn't matter if you were comon law or not. If you two didn't have any bills together, then just walk away. If you did have bills together, then I hope to God you put into writing what you would pay for, and what she would pay for. If you didn't, then your credit rating could be taking a serious nose dive.
Sorry, that's all I've got.

Why do they need it? Are they really in trouble or are they just looking for some money? If you think they really need help, I might give them a little bit to help them get by (but I wouldn't make it that easy for them, because you don't want it to become a habit.)

No! My ex was always around when I had money and always with someone else when I didn't. Sometimes when we are caught up in a situation we are blind! Keep your money!

Not all states have common law marriages anymore, you might want to make sure yours does before you get a lawyer!
