I only ask this to the ones who dont want certain immigrants in America and think they should speak the launguage before they come here..

My ancesters from Russian did not know-but were encouraged to learn it after arrival..with help and they did ok.

Should we have to leaarn a laungauge befor we can visit a Non-english speaking country?

It takes years to learn a languange.. be realistic--And I said nothing about "Spanish" speaking countries..

The best way to learn is through emmersion

I agree with clawdaddy.

I also don't think it should be any easier for immigrants to set up roots here in America than it was for our own anscestors. If it takes a generation or two for the immigrant family to become prosperous, so be it. That's why hard work and a traditional family structure are so important....plus extended family, community etc.

Considering that the United States is a tourist destination for every breathing soul with a passport, regardless of whether or not they speak our language, I don't think we are are overly obligated to be fluent in French if we want to spend a week in Paris.
Your question speaks more to immigration though I think. To that I would offer this. If you immigrate to another country with the intention of setting up roots, educating yourself, raising a family, starting a business etc.., Then you damn well ought to learn the language and the customs of the people your living amongst. This would apply to an American going to live in a foriegn country as well in my opinion.

Most of the people that people complain about are not here on vacation, they have lived here for many, many years. As for vacations, it would not be necessary to learn an entire language just to visit for a short time. Most other countries have learned some of the English language simply because of tourism.

Immigration and vacation are two totally different issues. If I were moving to any country, I would definitely learn their language BEFORE moving there, as is expected and required everywhere but here.

Vacation - we should be able to go anywhere we like, yes. And yes, I would learn the language (at least to a certain extent) before going.

Some Americans shouldn't be allowed in other countries. Americans stick out like sore thumbs. Each time I've been in other countries, I pretend I don't speak English just so I don't have to hear their "OH FINALLY SOMEONE WHO SPEAKS ENGLISH!"

When traveling to other countries, people should always learn some words. (For emergency and safety reasons.)

They are not 'visiting' they are LIVING HERE! If you move to a foreign country, other than America, you are expect to learn that language...including Spanish speaking countries! Why is it different here?

I think that we should be able to vacation in foreign countries.

However, if I were planning on MOVING to a foreign country, I would learn the language of that country. I would not expect people in that country to learn English to accommodate me.

It's not really the same thing to visit another country and to take up residence there.
