I am called back for the part of Laura in Glass Menagerie, and she is totally different from anything I've ever done! I'm pretty much happy and like to party and hang out and social and flirty and she's not. I know you will say that I should focus on what Laura WANTS to be and not what she IS, but I'm afraid if I do that I'll seem too outgoing. What should I do? I really really want to do this show. And no it's not for money.

Imagery and character exercise: Imagine Laura is "time-delayed"...every action rather slow and deliberate--almost as though she's moving through a fog or even underwater....your Character has to be multi-dimensional, perhaps she's tentative like an old house cat and moves in a certain way...OBSERVE and construct your character based on TRUTH...what is the dominate emotion in Laura..is it fear or is she in a fantasy world, is she 'retarded' to a lesser degree...FIND her, and BE her...it doesn't matter who "you" the actor are in your own physicial reality....Acting is embracing and embodying the character as built by the clues in the Script, the Director's notes and your talent/creativity/imagination and ability to build and convey TRUTH to your castmates & audience.....Just Believe~

Well, first of all, you should relax and forget everything that you are. Acting is like painting (in a funny kind of way) and you need a blank canvas to start with.

Secondly, you have to show them that you are flexible and can be anything. So don't focus too hard on being everything you think the character is, just what about her will contribute nicely to the play.

Thirdly, show them that you have nerves of steel (even if you don't). Make it look like that if they suddenly asked you to to stand on your head and sing opera, you would do it without worrying about doing it right. You see what I mean? They look for confidence, flexibility, and pure talent. If you can manage to show them that you have all three, you'll really nail the audition.

Hope that helped. :)

She's a very passionate character, just as you are a very passionate person just in a different way. Think about what the Glass Menagerie, the unicorn, the Victrola and the fire escape mean to her :-) You'll find your focus!

If you can act, this should be no problem.

Give it your best shot and use any 'acting instincts' you might have.

Good luck!
