i just got a 2003 aprilia scarabeo. my knowledge of scooters is practically nonexistent, so i'm learning as i go. anyways, i can get it started, but my main question is this: how do you get the kickstand to go back up? i try pushing it and it won't budge, and thus far the only way i can do it is if i turn the whole scooter on its side. help.

try reading the owners handbook.
Usually they move pretty easy if you lift weight off them.
There is a possibility its solenoid operated
( I have no knowledge of these scooters)

Read the owners manual. If that is not available, than talk to the people you bought it from. They should have a working knowledge of the bike. Of course if they sold it because they could not figure out the kickstand, then all bets are off.
Enjoy the bike.

Try pulling in the brake, i had a dirtbike that when you pulled in the clutch the kickstand would go up. May be yours is the same way. but i dont think you have a clutch so try pulling in the brake or better yet if its one of those kinds that puts the whole back tire in the air. Sit on it and slowly roll forward with you weight toward the front. It should pop back. Sorry no scotter experience.

I like 30yearsago's answer. Ride your scoot to a shop and ask questions. Advice is free.
The kickstand could be bent, over tightened, the pivots rusted/corroded.

1) Remove kickstand
2) lean bike against building

The best thing is find a dealer or repair shop swallow your pride and ask questions. a bruised ego isn't going to hurt that long, and they can help you with tips on servicing your scooter.

if your ashamed to ask that question to your manufacturer ask someone who may have the same model as you do. you won`t know if you don`t ask. after all, learning is a lifetime process. godbless

THE KICK STANDS USUALLY HAVE A FAIRLY BIG
SPRING ATTACHED TO THEM TH ATS PRETTY STIFF.
YOU MIGHT WANT TO CHECK THAT TO SEE WHAT CONDITION IT IS IN, OR IF SOMETHING IS LODGED IN THERE AND PREVENTING IT FROM WORKING
