there is a bug...we always called it a spit bug...but it makes a spit like stuff when it eats the grasses.

dont know where you live but it could be dense spider webs that they make at night, look very white and small, about the size of a quarter and abound in the grass in Georgia.

Did it rain recently? I would guess slugs. They come up to the surface when its damp outside and leave trails of slime on everything as they move.
