I have a 27ft. Catalina and will be making the trip later this summer.

obviously watch your weather carefully, not only for tropical storms acomin but for afternoon thunderstorms and squalls...even if you're going direct, I'd carry the Chart Kits or equivalent for the whole LA / Miss/ Ala FL panhandle coast.....you never know where you might have to duck in......

and Good Luck picking your way thru the hundreds of oil rigs, platforms, pipelines, mooring buoys and supply ships out there......I've done 30,000 miles or so at sea in small boats and sailing in the Gulf gives me the willies trying to avoid all that stuff!

for a Catalina 27, figure a max hull speed of about 6.25 knots; 5 knots made good is more like it; and realistically, 100 miles made good a 24 hour day is what you should plan on......
