You can have the car shipped by a long distance company. The cost varies but is not prohibitive if your schedule is flexible. It sure beats driving it there.
Most every state requires you to take a written test only. That is because some states have different laws and rules than others. You should get a driver's manual from the new state and read it well. There is usually a grace period between the time you move to that state and when you must change your license. Find out what the law is in the new state.

You can get a trailer to put your car on and take with you. If you want it shipped from west to east, expect about $1500 to do so.
In most states, you do have to retake the written test, but not the driving test. You can usually get a driver's manual online now, so you can study while making the trip. Make sure to look up state laws regarding time frames, as most states only allow 30-60 days to get a new license and register your vehicle.

Within the US, you don't have to retake your license. States are required to respect each other's licenses. You can drive your car cross country, of course; you can also ship it with various companies (this is expensive) or tow it behind a U-haul (which is cheaper, but has to be done right). Even if you move to Canada, which I did, you don't have to retake your license as long as you have a 'full' license, not a learner's one.
EDIT
Apparently Alberta is kinder to americans than some states are. Thanks for the correction, folks-I guess you'll be finding out at your DMV.

Put your car on a car dolly and tow it behind the uhaul, pay someone to drive it cross country, drive it yourself. You don't need to retake your test just go to the DMV in the new city and get your licensed changed to that state.

Unfortunately, harv is misinformed about the licenses. I moved from NY to Indiana, and I had to retake the written exam to get my Indiana drivers license. So it depends on the state to which you are moving.
