the mean, or average, is found by adding the sum of the numbers and dividing my the amount of numbers added. In this case, (2+5+3+7+8+3+4)/(7 numbers) = 4.6

2 and 30 are not even faintly reasonable answers, since the mean is always greater than the smallest datum and less than the largest. 7.2 isn't very reasonable either, given all the data less than 7.
Add them up: 32. Divide by how many you've got: 7. Mean is 4.57, rounds off to 4.6

the mean is the average of the numbers you have. let's say that those numbers you have are test results of 7 pupils (7 numbers). you have to add them all up 2+5+3+7+8+3+4=32
then divide it by the amount of numbers you've got: 7
now all you have to do is divide 32 by 7
answer: 4.571428571
round it: 4.6

Mean is defined as average. You find average by adding all the numbers in the data set and dividing by the number of members in the data set, in this case 32/7.
