...that was one creepy flick, man!!!
You're talking avout a little horror ditty from 1981, entitled "The Pit"; in the film, the boy is autistic, and he is being picked on by the neighborhood kids. His parents think he's distrubed, and they sort of ignore him. However, deep in the woods, the lad finds a black pit, where strange and voracious creatures, he calls Trogs or something. Putting two and two together, the boy figures out how to feed the creatures....and get some revenge, too.
That's gotta be the one you're looking for!!!
I have included a webpage, indictatng the film's availability on DVD; Anchor Bay Entertainment released the film on a double-feature disc, with the 1989 supernatural horror/revenge flick, entitled "Hellgate", starring Ron Palillo (yes, of the '70's "Welcome Back, Kotter" fame).

The Gate...plays a record backwards...opens a gate to hell..in back yard...to bring demons to surface one must make a sacrifice...guy places dead dog in hole...demons come up.Kid never actually fed them.
