Someone in another thread expressed shock that someone gave a thumbs down to a vet. I am a vet myself, and while I would prefer that people respect my service, I expect NOBODY to respect me simply because I am a vet. You don't know me..why would I think I command your respect simply because I am a veteran? respect my service, and the time I gave to my country, but you can dislike me and the ideals I stand for all you want.

Well, I do appreciate that you feel my service is worthy of respect. But it does put a hefty burden on otheres, doesnt it? I mean..if one feels they cannot argue, nor tell me they think I am a total loser, simply because I am a vetaran, it is stifling to productive debate. And it is very true..so many have elevated vets onto a pedestal. And they are really no better or worse than anyone else. Firemen put their lives on the line daily..as do police officers..and sadly, in some cases, our children's teachers. Every sacrifice that anyone makes for their country is worthy of respect. This includes even farmers who work so hard to simply get food to our grocery stores. Every contribution is worthy of respect. Not just the big ones.

I was dealing with this problem last night. A guy made my girlfriend all upset, crying and everything by some dumb comment he made, but I knew he was a vet.

I wanted to say something, but I expected the following

Hey, dirtbag, perhaps you should be a little nicer to the lady.
She should toughen up, like I had to for iraq
(What do you say after that?)
I respect your service, but you're still a drunk scumbag?

Respect is given to those who earn it, and yes a vet earns respect, but they lose that respect as soon as they do something stupid. There are a lot of vets that have done some dumb things in their lives after they got out of the service, and after that they have lost all respect. Look at Lee Harvey Oswald, and any other person that has gone crazy or beat his wife after they got out. Its not right to treat other people like trash just because you have been through the dirt.

I think there is a difference between showing respect and respecting someone for the character they have. I think we should respect all Veterans who have been willing to choose a profession or get drafted into a profession that allows me and others to live freely in the land of the free.

Now do I have to respect a person who might be bitter, less than congenial, or feeling entitled, or carry a grudge and hate in their heart...No...I don't think so.

I will show respect for the service they have given, but I will not respect their disrespectful behavior and mannerisms. :)

I respect anyone who chose to lay their life on the line for the freedom that we enjoy every day.

You did not have to go and fight to preserve what so many take for granted and yet you did. I am raising 2 of my grandchildren in a free country because of a choice you made. So, yes I respect you for it. Not just the job you did or the way you did it, but the fact that you chose to do it shows what type of person you are. For that reason I respect you, I have taught my children to respect you and I am raising 2 of my grandchildren to respect you.

this is a free country you as a vet you should know that we all cant be forced to like someone just because of there job no matter what job it is out there and theres a big diffrence between a teacher and a fireman or a soliders job they deserve respect too but most demand it and thats where the problem comes in.

I saw that same one, and what was funny was there were two vets who gave responses...and I think she was only defending the republican one. And no, there are so many people that serve in the military, I think it is absurd to think they are one group with one voice that we should all agree with. I do not think a person should spit on a soldier for the same reason...you don;t know that person, and that person is still just a person, not worthy of anymore or any less than any other person.

Look, a vet is just a person just like anyone else.

They put their pants on one leg at a time and are just as full of BS as the next guy.

Just because they signed a piece of paper making them property of the US government for part of their lives does not automatically entitle them to respect.

It is what a person does that will get them respect or disrespect.

For example Timothy McVeigh was a vet, do you really think that particular POS deserves any respect?

Let me start out by saying that I am a Vet (Vietnam), and so were both my parents (WWII). Now, having said that I respect people who respect me. If someone shows me undeserved disrespect then they shouldn't expect to receive respect from me, Vet, or not. I can respect someones service or sacrifice, but abhor their actions if warranted. Nobody gets a free ride in this life.

I respect you and all veterans for your service to our country. Thank you.

But I don't give veterans a free pass to go without criticism. They are entitled to their opinions, just like everyone else.

If anything, I see more dissing of the opinions of non-veterans by veterans (warranted or not) than the other way around.

I believe vets deserve our respect for their service to our country but can lose that respect if they turn on us. Benedict Arnold served until greed and ego got the better of him. John Kerry same thing.
