Yes, it does. It even costs more in power bills when you use the AC at home.

The air conditioning in cars does reduce fuel mileage, although it is not as much as in older vehicles. Autos are so much more aerodynamic now that if you left the windows down it would actually use more fuel than if you ran the a/c. Anything that makes the engine work harder does decrease fuel mileage,i.e. a/c compressors.

This issue was addressed on the TV show Myth Busters recently. They found little to no difference between a car driven with air conditioner on and a car with the windows open. The air conditioning compressor puts a drag on the engine but if the windows remain closed the car is more aerodynamic.

most AC compressors are driven by the belt, that is driven by a pulley on the end of the crank.

when the AC is off, that little electric clutch in the center of the AC pulley is not engaged, and that pulley is just 'free-wheeling'..but engage that clutch, and it connects the compressor mech to the pulley, and yeah, it takes power to make that li'l ol' compressor go round and round.

have your car in idle, in park, and watch the compressor. have a friend turn on the AC, and you'll see the clutch engage, and watch the RPM drop for a few seconds...that's it sucking power off the belt...

it's an open question whether the AC is worse for fuel economy than is rolling down all the windows.

reduce the fuel __economy???? yes. The engine uses some of the power it is creating to turn the ac compressor, and has to work harder to maintain the same speed. Hope it helps and Good Luck

Fuel is reduced because it is another thing that the engine needs to power

No and it was proven on tv that by using the a/c the vehicle actually got better gas mileage than with the windows down.

They used two of the same type of vehicles and they used 1 gallon of gas and set the cruise at 50 miles per hour.

I didn't believe it until I saw it for myself.

If you meant reduce mpg then yes they do, they use alot of power and thus increase fuel consumption

The fact that your belt turns the A/C pump wether its on or not is the issue. Since it turns it regardless, you will lose minimal power. You will never notice it. The fuel consumption might be affected a little more if the A/C is on.My Dakota gets the exact same mileage either way. Remember the pully is turning all the time. The more pullys you have the more strain on the motor.
