It's not a choice for most, but I'm sure there exist a few who actively decide to take part in the lifestyle, and that's all fine and good.
I don't understand how people can think homosexuality is a choice. Why would anyone choose to be in a minority that is persecuted and marginalized at times for ridiculous reasons? If people would just stop and think about this for a second, they'd see how ridiculous a proposition this is.

Nope. We are born this way.
To Joe: How is being gay [and a choice] comparable to drugs? Is being straight also a choice? How does taking drugs have any similarities to being gay.
Yes taking drugs is a choice, so is sleeping with a woman (which is actually more relevant to this).
Hows this sound: A man sleeping with a man is a choice because a man also choses to sleep with a woman, and the same goes for woman. However our sexual orientations are not a choice because it is upon these impulses we act in our decision of which gender to have sexual intercourse with.
better?

Oh so let me get this right it's a choice to be abused ! ridiculed and heckled and to be an outcast in society by those who are narrow minded and cannot accept that life includes a variety of people ! Is that what a few of you are saying ? Maybe you also dare say that to a black person or someone in a wheelchair, transsexual (girl/boy trapped in the wrong body); are those choices we make too!
I do not make a choice in whom I fall in love with; nobody does. However I do think I have a right to be happy something everyone else appears to take for granted is theirs too. You know meet someone and settle down to a long monogamous (marriage) relationship. An awful lot of so called Christians (possibly applies to other religions) take this for granted they however (the ones I have met ) do'nt expect anyone else outside the 'norm' any happiness. Begs the question what is the norm in my book it does'ent exsist.
That's life; the sooner you accept that life is full of rich variety, and the less of judgementalness for all.
Rant over just annoyed me a bit some of the ignorant comments.

Homosexuality is NOT a choice.
Who in their right mind would CHOOSE to be gay with all the stigmas, fears and violent acts directed toward gays by society?
When you start liking others, it's just a feeling. You can't control it any more than we can... And if all of us in our thousands and thousands and thousands were acting or pretending, why would we CHOOSE to look at people of the opposite sex and not show our feelings?

Who we have sex with is a choice. However, just like you can't choose who you fall in love with, you can't choose to be attracted to someone, male or female. You just are. I've heard that scientists are now finding that there may be a gene connected with homosexuality. Heterosexuals can choose to believe that being gay is a choice, but ask just about anyone who is homosexual and they will tell you they were born that way. Why would someone CHOOSE to go through all of the ridicule and criticism homosexuals receive nowadays? And why does it even matter if it's a choice or not. People should let others just be instead of placing blame because of certain differences. If everyone would focus on making themselves better, the world would be a much better place!

Homosexuality is a genetic predisposition which many people have. The difference for some people is that they do not act on these impulses but they DO have them.
That being said, the lifestyle you choose IS YOUR CHOICE, the same as you choose what you eat or what you smoke or what you drink, lifestyle is a choice.
The decisions you make are entirely up to you.
The entire basis of many religions is suppressing your natural urges. Gay people, in a lifestyle context, do not adhere to the suppression of these urges.
Hope that helps

Hmmm. This question gets asked regularly and will probably get asked again. It is a question that won't go away. Whenever I see it I just keep wondering, what does it matter? I mean, so what if it is who really cares? Why should you care if it is a choice? Live your life how you want and let other people live their life how they want, whether your sexuality it is a choice or it is inherent.

No, it isn't a choice but more like something you develop very young in live, some even go deeper and say its developed in your genetic code but I find it hard to believe that. So the basic concept is that it is encoded into you at a early age and as you grow those feelings grow as well and one day you come to the conclusion that yes you are a homosexual, living your life and enjoying each and every new day from that.

You can't choose who you love...
Whether that includes gay people or not, that's a deeper question. It all comes down to nature vs. nurture. Do your genes determine who you become or does your upbringing and environment? Which of the two is more predominant? Is there really a gay gene? Who can really know for sure?
This is a very speculative question, which needs to be discussed in a deeper manner than can be talked about on yahoo answers.

yes, just like how most of the world chose to be straight. It is NOT a choice. Seriously if it was a choice, do you think anyone would choose to be discriminated against?
