I always do but here is a tip if you are the person who is doing the collecting you can pick the gift and if you don't like the person you can pick something hideous and if you really hate the person get something in really large size. Be sure to say "I saw this and thought it would be perfect for you, was praying they would have it in your size and there it was a 3x!"
Happy Birthday and Many More

Maybe £1. The big boss just retired to a pension of £50K and a lump sum of £150K tax free and I'm still expected to contribute? Yeah right.

Of course! I keep my feelings to myself when I'm at work. You never know who the bosses regard as good sources for feedback, so I like to be on everyone's good side. Two-faced? You bet. But I try to keep my eyes open so I won't be stabbed in the back. You know how office politics can be.

Yeah, I think you have to. Otherwise you run the risk of having other co-workers thinking you're a cheapskate or not a team player. But suggest a really really bad gift.

Yes, I put in the same amount as someone I really like.

No, only contribute money if you like the person. If they ask why you're not donating, just say it's not in your budget at this time or you aren't financially able to donate, but maybe next time.

If this is something they do often at your workplace and you normally contribute then I would say yes. If this is something that a few coworkers decided to do for this someone that they do like and it doesn't normally occur then I would say no.

Yes, because its the polite thing to do. Especially when you have to work in a small enviornment...it's better to go with the flow.
