I have read in a sports digest magazine that most first basemen like to chat with the baserunners. Mostly just pleasantries.

First of all, they are all professionals. They aren't enemies just because they are on different teams. A lot of the guys know each other from the minor leagues and also from college. Sometimes, a player will meet and then marry another players sister. Trust me on this one. They are like a family when it comes to their sport. Secondly, players get traded all the time. Chances are that most of them used to be team mates at one time or another.
Other times they are just talking about stuff. Some guys play golf together, hunt together, fish, or play cards together in the off season.
The real question is: What do they not talk about while on first base???

Yeah, this is a common practice for most first basemen. When you're at the stadium for most of the day and afterwards you go to a hotel, and come back the next day to do it all over again its nice to just talk to someone, its a long season. Conversations include, how's your family, how are you doing, your hitting mechanics and sometimes, the first basmen mentions something about the ball, the pitcher and oh yeah, the runner's being tagged out.

He can't possibly talk to every baserunner because doubles, triples, and HR's are considered baserunners and I have yet to see one of those runners stopping to have a chit-chat before moving on to the next base.

Lots of first basemen talk to the runners. Usually the conversation is about family, the game, who's in the stands, any random thing. Steve Garvey, Todd Helton, and Keith Hernandez were 3 guys who loved to talk to the runners.

most 1B are chatty folks. my brother even as a catcher then converted to 1B always used to talk to people about the most random stuff. hey, how's the weather, blah blah. it is a distraction to the runner. Makes them lose their focus and not pay attention the pitcher, etc. watch nick swisher when he plays first for the a's...always chatting up the runners.

They usually talk to runners cause it keeps them focus on something other then base running and that can turn into an advantage for the firstbaseman
