It largely depends on the skill of the tech and the quality of the machine. It also depends on whether the baby is a boy or a girl - it is easier to be more definite about a boy for obvious reasons.
It's difficult to quote statistics but as far as I have been able to ascertain, I'd say that overall they are about 85-90% accurate.
However as the quality of machines is getting better, and the skill of the technicans in being honed because they are doing this more and more often, it's getting very good indeed. There is a tech at our referral hospital that has a nearly 100% strike rate - and even then she'll admit when she isn't sure. Every time she says that she is definitely sure she is right.
Best of luck.

It depends on the experience of the person doing the ultrasound, how clear the shot is, and things of that nature. If it was a clear, open legged, "hello world" shot, than I'd bet its pretty accurate. Little boy ultrasounds and little girl ultrasounds (if done well and a clear shot) look VERY different. Of course, there is always room for error. The 3D and 4D ultrasounds are more for the parent's sake. They look awesome, so if you want to plunk down the money, go for it! Best of luck.

It really depends on the person reading the ultrasound, but for the most part they are very accurate. Were they able to see everything clearly or did they have to look hard to find it? If the doctor seemed confident then I'd say it's right. If they were hesitant then I'd wait to paint the walls pink.

I would say it depends on how cooperative your little one was. There was no denying what we saw on the screen. lol. He was happy to open his legs and let his manliness come on the screen. After he showed it twice he went to sleep. So we have a cute picture of his little butt. If she was willing enough to give the technician a good look at her body then I would say it's extremely accurate. Sometimes a techinician will tell you "I'm 80% sure...or 60% sure" If the technician told you and didn't give you a percentage, I would say you can be assured it's a girl. Congrats!!

3D ultrasounds are AWESOME! An ultrasound is only 93.3% accurate in predicting the sex of your baby. The only 100% way to know is an amniocentesis where they run the DNA or giving birth.
