This is NOT a do it yourself job. Call a septic tank pumper and have them pump it out. Depending on how many people live in the house and how big the tank is, but on average every 3-5 years.

Do not waste your money with any kind of septic system additives, they do not work and some can damage your system. See the sources for an excellent, non-biased article.

Also, never ever ever get inside a septic tank. The fumes can kill you (aside from the fact it smells horrible!).

You have to hire a company to come and suck it out every 5 years. The cost of doing so should run you around $50 - $100 I believe. However, there are things that you should not put down your drains or flush down the toilet that could occupate much more room in the tank such as: powdered washing detergent (it makes big soap balls with grease that is accidently put down the sink, use the liquid detergent if possible), oils, and food

Just hire a professional to come pump it.
Be wary of DIY tips. One elderly man only used yeast the entire time he and his wife lived in their home. He wouldn't cough up the funds for a professional and believed the yeast would be effective enough to eat the bacteria. When the two of them died, their children had to replace the entire system and it was very expensive.
When you resell your house, people are going to want viable sources that you cared for your septic system. Professional records are more credible than DIY when it comes to this topic.

It's not exactly a do-it-yourself job. You need to hire a professional, AKA a honey-dipper (honest--that's what they're called!).

Unless you enjoy playing and getting covered in you own feces, hire professionals to do it. I can understand keeping it empty and flowing but clean, come on man, its poop!!!!
