there's no hard and fast rules about this, but double-barrelled names are frequently made up of the father and mother's family names. So if two people come to a marriage, if they agree to share their name, it is common to 'drop' the mothers' part of their surnames and merge the two father's names and that their future surname consists of just two surnames representing the male part of their lines.
It's a bit pretentious though, isn't it.

Good question! The reason you have double-barrelled names is often because a bride does not want to give up her own surname and adopt her husbands - historically it was often aristocratic families who wanted the family name to continue. So, if a bride already has a double-barrelled surname and feels like this, you could be looking at triple or qualdruple barrel surnames. God knows where you'd be another generation down the line!

Usually the wife takes on the husband's surname. She would just take on his double barrelled name.
Edit - Tufty Porcupine. Surely you are talking about the bride's family name, as opposed to what she wants to be known as once married!? Just because she has inherited a double barrelled surname from her parents does not necessarily mean she wants to keep that one when she is married.

usually you'd take your hubbies name....otherwise you risk sounding absolutely rediculous with a quadruple barrelled name!
