I'm assuming this is a joke, but interestingly enough, there are ways for lepers to keep from losing body parts. It was once believed that lepers' body parts simply fell off, but it was discovered that since they lose feeling in their extremities, they were often unaware when damage was being done. There was once a British couple who ran a hospital for lepers in India, and they gave each of the patients a cat, so that when the patients slept, the cat could kill the rats and the rats couldn't chew off the body parts of the patients.
