You would probably be better off starting your own, to purchase an existing business may cost you close to $100,000 or more, depending on the size of the business, equipment that would be included, company vehicles, their clientele list, etc. The list goes on and on.

Since you are just getting started, I'd suggest starting one on your own. That way you quickly learn what you can and cannot do. Buying one is a huge capital outlay with no guarantee you have the knowledge or experience to keep up the business. People will give a new owner just a short time to prove themselves before the bail out.

Starting a new business, you'd better have capital up front because for the first year you probably won't make a liveable wage. You'll be purchasing or leasing equipment, getting certifications (pesticide application, etc) etc. I highly recommend getting an accountant immdediately! Most small businesses fail due to poor money management. (that's straight from my Small Business Admin guru) You may know plant care, but nothing about money. You need someone with business sense on your side.

Now if you are making a go of your own business, you can always buy a business later and merge them.

First you need to find an existing business to buy. If you do not wish to start out completely on your own, look in the business section of your newspaper on businesses for sale. Do you know anyone in the business? Perhaps they too, can give you some leads. Some questions to ask yourself would be how much of maintenance in the business are you willing to do? Are you designing the landscape, maintaining it? Talk to a the small business administration too. They have great advice about structuring your company and how to get started. Look into any educating and licenses you may need in your local area, too.
