Much before Newton, the laws of planetary motion were discovered and used in astronomy / astrology. Newton certainly added much to our knowledge and his laws of motion stood the test of time till the world of small particles, quantum physics and relativistic mechanics came and showed the limitations. For large scale objects and for non-relativistic speeds, Newton's laws are quite valid.

Newton's Laws are well-known, have been shown to work over hundreds of years of testing, and are really the easiest laws to use in mechanics, believe it or not!

As long as you know something about the forces involved, then applying Newton's Laws is the simplest and most reliable way to solve the problem. Exceptions would be in extreme domains, such as relativity and quantum mechanics.
