There is no way to define what is right in either society or ones own believes.
The problem is everyone has their own ideas on what is right and what is wrong, in the end all we can do is what we think is right.

It really depends on the society, but in the USA since freedom of the individual is paramount, then what is right depends on you. You can determine what is right to pursue your life, liberty and happiness, but there is one caveat; you must not tread upon the safety and well being of others in your pursuit.

The people in power define what is right.. either to appease the people or to get what they want and convince the people that it is whats right. At least thats how it started.

being right comes in the form of morals
being moral is to have the ability to differentiate between good and bad behavior and to be able to tell the difference between what is right and what is wrong. being morally right is good and does not burden your coincidence at all. but being morally wrong will do the exact opposite.

every person is born knowing what is right and wrong and even if it is the tradition of something that can not make it right .if you have to ask is it wrong? it is wrong .
