Excellent question but I am going to withhold a specific answer until I see the socialists answers.

Any bets you will not get any from the socialists?

The beginning of May is the holiday of laboring classes worldwide because it is associated with the Haymarket riots in Chicago which led to the acceptance of eight hours as the standard length of a working day.

The memories of that tragedy are painful for America, so our Labor Day takes place in September instead. A number of so-called "anarchists" were tried and convicted, and four of them were executed in spite of protests from all over the world. Then a new governor was elected and promptly commuted the sentences of those remaining on death row. It ended his political career but he salvaged America's honor to the best of his ability.

The persons condemned were not even present at the riot. They were prosecuted not for anything that they had done but for what they believed and for words they had written and spoken. Not exactly a high point in America's history. No surprise that we prefer to hold our Labor Day holiday on a date that will not remind us of what was done because of the tragic events at the Haymarket on May 4, 1886.

May 1st was the original celebration of Labor Day. Socialist and labor groups used this date to commemorate the Haymarket Affair of 1886 (which occurred in Chicago on May 4th, but the dispute which led to the subsequent riot began on the 1st). It was established as a International Workers Day in the 20th century by socialist and other groups, while in 1921 the US would go on to declare May 1st as "Loyalty Day". And of course our labor day is now the first Monday in September.
