It depends on the reference - as many people have pointed out it was the name of a sexual precocious child in a novel and is sometimes applied to describe someone of the same nature or the fetish in where the female dresses much younger than her age.

Nowadays it is also applied to a NON SEXUAL FASHION. Lolita is a fancy fashion subculture that comes out of Japan and is loosely based on Victorian and Rococo fashions. It's quite beautiful and very conservative, most Lolita's wear high collars, sleeves, and skirts that reach at least to their knees with bloomers underneath. There are many different styles ranging from gothic, to sweet, to punk, to classic.

If you are interested in Lolita fashion there are many groups on Live Journal and I have one here on yahoo. There are also many different brands out of Japan that sell beautiful Lolita clothing.

Lolita was book about the relationship between an under-age girl and a middle age man written by Vladimir Nabokov.
Stanley Kubrick directed a film of the same name, starring James Mason.

Whether the plot is about the exploitation of a young girl by a lecher or the manipulation of a weak man by a calculating, sinister girl is a matter for debate.

So far there have been 2 films made of this book, that I know of.
