it seems to be less developed than western stuff

NASA spent millions developing a pen that could write in space. The Russians used a pencil.

The Americans thought the Russian fighter planes were primitive because they weren't electronic. Then they realised that they would survive an electro-magnetic pulse which would knock out the American planes.

Eastern technology (Japanese) is still ahead of Western technology. However I don't think technological development is as much a priority as spiritual development for the people of this planet at the moment. Then maybe we wouldn't waste billions on keeping up with the Jonovski's nuclear arsenal.

It's not less developed, but you have to understand that during the arms race (the cold war era) the Soviet economy was highly streached and materials were at a premium, so cutbacks had to be made on a lot of things. Plus, the Slavic mindset seems to be considerably more pragmatic than that of the US, the latter being more 'style over substance', or 'look over function' if you will. Several extremely popular designs have come out of the Soviet era in the U.S.S.R, but due to the nature of the 'conflict' at the time, most are of either a military, or space-race nature. The best example of which is possibly the AK47 (Avtomat Kalashnikova 1947), the most popular primary-arm in the world.

It's also worth considering the fall of communism and the rise of the 'St. Petersberg Sindicate' in russia and it's old 'child-states'. The breaking up of the USSR itself has caused a number of small conflicts. Because of the unrest I imagine things have stagnated a little, what with lack of funding and less desire to 'compete' as they have less of a strong political agenda behind technological developement. It's worth pointing out however that one of the best games I've played this year was created by a Russian developement team.

^Just thought I should point out, that unless it's energy, or a base element, it's likely to be made of chemicals. Water is a chemical for example...

It all stems back to democracy. Many parts of russia today are in horrible condition, due to the fact of russian polotics changing drasticlly over the last 40/50 years. Russia has been affected badly by this. Its a long and confusing subject, but yes, Russia is far behind the west.

Someone said it is because they drink to much vodka...well that is a fine example of your subject, because over the last few years people have been making "fake vodka" in russia selling it to people. Really what this "vodka" contained was chemicals and a load of deadly and poiseness things. These groups made it because they saw that people couldnt afford the real vodka, and so people bought this and now millions of people in Russia are dieing and extremely ill from drinking this deadly stuff. It is a fine example of the changes in Russia. This is a very in-depth subject and a very interesting one but the reason for Russias decline, as I said stems from polotics.

I am not saying that russian technology is rubbish, but just saying there is a small mijority Russia that do not care for the general public and there just there for themselves so make money and gain power. Its like bullies in school...a small mijority, but they cause a fair bit of destruction.

Note to the Russian government:

This is an opinion & no way slating the Russian presidency. I accept no responsibility for this comment, and ask you politely if you would not poisen me with Nuclear radiation. Thanks :D

Well some Russian technology is very good. They build the best ejector seat in the world (the Zvezda K-36) and on quite a regular basis they send people into space, without to many accidents.

Don't confuse 'less developed' with 'no good'. The rocket used to launch Soyuz spacecraft to the ISS is essentially the same rocket used to launch the very first Soyuz spacecraft in 1967, and the first stage of the rocket is largely unchanged since it was developed as the R-7 ICBM in 1957, then later used to launch Sputnik, Vostok and Voskhod through the 1960s.

Russia naturally took a different developmental route than Western countries, largely because of its totally different political and historical footing.

Russian technology is fine it's built like a concrete outhouse. It may not be at the bleeding edge of technology but it works, which is more than can be said of some space shuttles.

I lived in the UK and in Russia for some time and belive me that what you saw on tv/news is a skewed represention of what they want you to see and believe

and maybe you think that all Africans are starving and all Iranians are Religious fanatics

Russian technology is one of he most developed in the world and if you can't see it does not mean it does not exist

Rather than call it "no good", I would say that there was a "lack of innovation". State-mandated production quotas to factories resulted in manufacturers taking lots of shortcuts to produce the required items. A lack of good logistics also resulted in resource shortages. The Soviet government also stifled innovation by restricting scientific and industrial research by condemning efforts that were seen as "bourgeois" or "fascist" and embracing initiatives with no basis in reality, such as Lysenkoism.

The Russians put up a sattelite... first. They had rockets that could put up heavier payloads than the U.S. They have nuclear-powered submarines and intercontinental ballistic missiles. SOME of the stuff they make is junk, but that can happen anywhere.

To say it's "no good" is ridiculous. They have always been towards the top in technology.
