paper mache` a pinyata out of a large balloon.
just use newspaper and flour and water mixed like a thin paste, let it dry (use a hair dryer to speed up the process) and add a few layers. cut a small door near the top to add candy, poke two holes with nails and twist two pipe cleaners for a hanger. then add another coat of paper mache` to reseal the door and hanger. paint add stickers or tissue...
we hung ours from the swingset with the swings removed.
3 year olds do not need blindfolds and plastic bats are perfect in case someone gets in the way.
have an extra stash of candy to toss around in the pile of kids so everyone gets candy and the biggest fastest toughest kids don't get it all since they got in the pile first.
give them empty treat bags to hold their candy, then treat bags are simple too. (if you want to just give each kid a trinket toy for their treat bags after the pinyata.
if it is wet or cold out, my sister did her pinyata in the garage with the cars outside.
if you are in a hurry, decorate a paper grocery bag tie closed and use a plastic bat. not as cute, but still fun for three year olds.

I am a mother of a 3 1/2 year old. My husband and I have a party every year for our child. If you want, get creative. Last year the theme for our sons party was cars and trucks. Instead of pin the tail on the donkey I drew a dump truck on a large poster board, cut out doors for each child. The object was to pin the door on the truck. This year is Spider-Man, same concept, drew a web, bought sticker paper at Wal-Mart (this is paper that comes in 8 1/2" by 11" sheets intended for a printer). Cut out circles and drew spiders on them. Stick the spider on the web. Obviously pin the tail on the donkey is also a great choice. Break the rules a little, don't blind fold the kids. Another game we played last year, reverse hot potato. I stuck a few items (a pencil and stencil in a bag) the kids had to pass it around, who ever was stuck holding the bag got to keep it and they were out. This can be costly though because everyone winds up getting a prize. Pinatas are also fun. You can get the pullstring pinatas now so kids don't need to hit them with a bat. If you have a particular theme and can't find a pullstring pinata revamp it, here's how: cut a flap out of the bottom of the pinata, tape long strands of curling ribbon to this flap, retape it with clear packing tape, have each child grab a string and they all pull their string at the same time. A few other games the kids could play are red light, green light. Dance freeze, play music and have the kids dance around, turn the music off and any one still moving is considered out of the game; duck, duck, goose; musical chairs; a bean bag toss game or ring toss game and/or regular hot potato. These are games that are fairly quick to play and you won't lose the children's attention.Another suggestion I have, check out Oriental Traders, especially if you decide to go with a pinata or reverse hot potato. They have great items that are reasonably priced and they have candy in bulk. I made the ring toss game out of card board (cut out different sized holes and wrote points by the circles 300 points, 400 points etc., I sewed 3" by 3" rectangles with some fabric and filled them with beans). The bean bag toss and ring toss can also be purchased through Oriental traders if you wanted to go that route. As I said some ideas are kind of costly, especially the pinata because you will need to fill it with candy. You might want to think about face painting or temporary tattoos, I know they aren't games, but kids love that stuff. Hope this was helpful. Have an awesome party and good luck!

I have a 3 year old brother and the kinds of games that we had at his party were pin-the-tail on the donkey, we had a pinata...that always seems to be fun for kids that age...you could also have all the kids race or play red-light green-light. I use to teach preschoolers and we played those sorts of games with the kids. Anything that gets them up and moving will interest them.

"a 3 year old party"
I'm surprised you still have the energy to play games after partying for 3 years!

A fun activity at a young child's birthday party is finger painting with pudding... that way you don't have to worry about them eating it. What you do is take vanilla pudding and food coloring and make different colors.... get paper and let them have fun!! It's great watching them (plus they will probably eat more of it than they will put on the paper but oh well they are kids)!! Hope this helped... have fun!!

Duck, duck, goose is always a popular one that they can understand the rules to. Also, try a coloring contest or Pin the Tail on the Donkey. A pinata can be fun, too.

It is always fun to have a Pinata filled w/ not only candy but small toys like bouncing balls, and bubbles ETC. Some other fun games may include a coloring contest or small scavenger hunt .

hide and seek, tag, etc. Don't try and have them play a game with a lot of rules. At this age they have short attention spans and would have more fun running around playing than being given a designated game.

for my daughter's 3rd birthday we made cupcakes and let the kids ice and decorate their own while we set up two wading pools and a sprinkler.. we let the kids play in the pools and run around just having fun being kids.. we didn't expect them to play games, rather, just play!
why should they have to play specific games? we had more fun letting them decide what to do with the water noodles and beach balls [from the dollar tree] than we'd have had letting them play games that we have to teach them to play or make sure they stick to the rules and not fight..
