I recommend discerning if it is the washer or dryer first simply wash two matching shirts hang one to dry, the other goes into the dryer. inspect to see if it is the washer. If it is the washer then you must begin to solve for what is causing the holes. here is a small begginers list. Overbleaching, Too hot water, excessively fast spin cycle, other clothes with sharpish corners or attachments (ie bra's underwire or hook/eye thingie), powdered detergent ( yes it has abrasive elements in certain hard/soft water areas) Pipe corrosion (small metal/rust flakes entering and leaving the wash cycles).

Check the clothes before washing. I have seen a situation where a paperclip had gotten into the dryer (could happen in a washer also) and attached to the drum. The clip then pierced holes in all the clothing. Run your hand around the inside of the drum to check for any sharp objects.

Could Be Mice! OR Moths! ( moths lay eggs AND can hatch during the winter in clothes) Call OR Go Talk To Your Exterminator And Ask Them. Do Not Forget To Take Along Some Of The Clothing With The Holes. Once The Exterminator Looks At The Clothing. They Should Be Able To Tell You If It Is Moths.

could it be your hamper? years ago (1970's) my mother noticed rust spots on clothing and assumed it was from the washer or dryer and went nuts trying to figure out the problem. Turns out her hamper had metal rivits inside and damp clothes in the hamper caused the rivits to rust and the rust transferred to the clothes. If you have a hamper with metal trim or even sharp plastic edges, could it be snagging you clothes? The same principal for the washer- check the inside and see- maybe some component is "sprung" and there is something sharp where there shouldn't be.

Cockroaches or termites could be the culprit. If you live in a building with common walls, you are more likely to have these critters. Moth balls or cedar chips are never a bad idea but a bug-bomb wouldn’t hurt as a just incase…

This is mostly due to buying clothes that use cheap fabric and washing too much also too much drying does this as well especially to clothes like T-shirts and jersey type materials. Good Luck !

Those holes are there when we buy the tops, we just don't see them until we wash them once-then they get bigger.

it's not your machine, it's moth larvae. They only feed on natural fiber. Get yourself some cedar or moth repellant.
