I am auditioning for A Midsummer Night's Dream in augeust at my school. I've never really been nervious for an audtion before, but with this one I am. I'm only 5'3" and I am afraid that I won't get the part because I'm to short. There are two girls who want to audition for Hermia that are smaller than me, but other than that I'm one of the shortest.

I was wondering if there was anyway for me to appear taller for the audition/show besides wearing slight heels.

What about your hair? Can you do a lot of big flowy curls with height on top? Slightly deeper necklines like a v-neck and a shorter hemline to elongate your legs can help you to appear taller too. Don't wear shoes that cut you off at the ankle or go up your leg either. All of that can make you look shorter. So can low waisted jeans and shirts that are too long or too baggy...

You know, if the casting director is good, and you audition well, it should not make that much of a difference. I have yet to see a production in which there really was that much difference between Hermia and Helena's heights.

However, there are a couple tricks of staging, such as having Hermia lead back a little, or have Helena up on some steps, et cetera.

Best wishes.

I want to second what Liath said. Their heights come up in exactly one place in the text. It's a good joke, but I really don't see changing you casting decision based solely on making that one joke work. The real soul of the gag is the physical comedy immediately afterwards, when Lysander and Demetrius restrain Hermia (usually by picking her up.)

In addition to you wearing heels, Hermia should wear flats or go barefoot. If she leans into you, and you take an entirely erect posture, it's give you another few inches, which is close enough to get you through the moment.

Indeed, a good casting director will not discount you for Helena for such a small thing. Trust the director to stage it so that it works. Your stress about something you can't control will only hinder you inauditions, so let it go.

If you want, you could wear a shoe with a heel, but make sure you can move freely in them. (The ability to move as directed it WAY more important than your height.) Shoes with pointed toes and narrow heels and long straight-legged pants lengthen the leg most, but again, be able to move.

A lot of that can be presented with posture. Stand straight up and keep your chin elevated. It isn't that important. As long as its obvious from the stage that you are taller than Hermia, the lines work.
