"A recent worldwide poll showed that under the Bush presidency, America has become the third most unpopular country in the world — right behind Iran and just ahead of North Korea. Why do you believe that has that happened?"

Anti-Americanism rising

Overall, this new opinion poll sampled the views of 26,000 people in 25 countries.

Three in every four of those questioned disapproved of how the US government was dealing with the crisis in Iraq.

The poll did not just deal with Iraq. It also asked questions about the US handling of Guantanamo detainees; the Israel-Hezbollah war; Iran's nuclear programme; global warming; and North Korea's nuclear programme.

In every case, a majority of those questioned disapproved of America's handling of the issue concerned.

This poll underscores conclusions drawn from several other surveys - that anti-Americanism is on the rise, and the more the US flexes its hard power - the more it deploys troops abroad or talks tough diplomatically - the more it seems to weaken its ability to influence the world.

Yup.
I got precisely the "answers" I was expecting. All of you bush apologists are standing naked in front of the mirror going, "My! What fine silk garments I am wearing!"

You make me sick.

Jealousy is what people would like to believe.

Fact is they don't like us because we're seen as just as big a threat, if not bigger, than the likes of Iran and N. Korea.

We have the most advanced military on the globe and we'll lie so we can attack anyone we please.

Before Bush took office we weren't this unpopular, but we've been this affluent and generally well off for a long, long time.

Why weren't they this "jealous" 50 years ago?? Logic dictates that it's not jealousy that's the culprit.

very sceptical on anyone who makes the claim " in a resent world wide poll). Polls will give you any result you desire, they are a poor gauge of most anything. how many did they call or contact, and I'm sure it was a telephone poll, pollsters are notoriously lazy, and there not going to walk door to door. we in the US get obseesed with polls, which have little to do with reality and more to do with bias. I can call 100,000 people, and if I ask the question just right, they give me the answer I desire, it's unfair to all of us, when the media portrays polls as the heart beat of a nation or world for that matter. " do you agree that the United states is not favored unfavorably to other people in other nations? yes or no, (see the confusion) or because your contacting say 1,000 people at random in every nation they ask a seeming benighn question like. rate your top three most unpopular nations at this time. yet with each nation called they bait the possible answers: " between yur nation , Iraq and the United states. and the next country it's your country, japan and united states, and the next Zimbabwe, United States and Estonia. now most people won't pick there own as the worst of three, and also if they know nothing of lesser media saturated nations, they tend to give them a good selection, but who does not know the USA. Most people are jealose of your freedoms, and your lifestyle, and that alone causes much bias. don't worry abut polls, theremotre often wrong than right.

Gee do you think it will help our popularity if we up and pull out of iraq and leave them high and dry? Maybe if we give into to the kyoto protocol and damage our economy while china and india just go on pollluting more and more we will get more popular. I guess we will also be popular with mexicans if we just leave our borders wide open. We would be so popular with the gay crowd if we would just let them get married, just go ahead and destroy marriage completely! We should just ask france's permission anytime we do anything foreign policy wise guess that would make us popular there. Truth is sister we were only popular when they needed us to protect them from the soviet union now that they are finished using us they want to call the shots. Also clinton had to bribe countries to be popular just harken back to albright bringing n.korea's dictator the mj autographed basketball and dom perignon. You liberals make us sick also! Remember half this country is conservative whether you like it or not.

it is not popular to be right, to be powerful, to be rich.

America leads the world in comfort, and in chutzpah...and we are the main target for disgruntled idiots from all over the globe.

who cares if we're unpopular? life is not a popularity contest. life is survival and life is service.

our country has survived the vitriol and jealousy of lesser nations for 2 centuries, and the only way we'll ever fail is if we allow Liberals to give it all away.

our country has engaged in service to other nations almost from the very beginning, and we have always been the most philanthropic, most giving, most benevolent nation in history.

these groups who responded negatively to that useless poll will be the first ones in line with their hands out when things get rough.

to answer your question as to 'why this has happened': liberals around the world hate the USA (even libs IN the USA) and will continue to run these mindless little polls and surveys to attempt to bring down the USA.

it's like shooting at a tank with a bb gun. who cares?

(Conservatives, Please read my ENTIRE statement before you automatically give me thumbs down!)

Because many people blame America for the loss of their own culture with the introduction of the consumerist way, and corporations in their country, creating a homogenized, (Americanized) world,

many times, they blame this form of consumerism/capitalism for the loss of worker rights and environmental devastation, (which there is a very strong case for)

and they look at this as a war of sorts, a take over, intentionally by our leaders, this is why they call us imperialist.
(and the wars by brute force we wage just exacerbate this feeling.)

but as a country, if you can be judged by the way we treat our own, We are actually one of the best,
this is why EVERYONE seems to want to move here, (or at least vacation here all the time, I mean, who the hell wants to vacation in North Korea!)
and they resent the hell out of us for that fact.
