this position had no specific name, it was just a slave.
and...
1. I would like to thank all of the other contributers for giving the same answer..."slave". good job!
2. No one knows exactly what was said. there are a number of different versions recorded by ancient historians which lead scholars to believe that although the theme of the message was the same, the words were different.
(does anybody want to repeat that?)

Slave.
The triumphator, in a golden chariot, wearing a tunica covered in palm leaves, under an embroidered, purple toga, with his face painted red. He was accompanied by a slave who stood behind him in the chariot, holding a golden crown over his head, whispering in his ears, "remember, you are mortal." When the procession reached the Capitoline, after dispatching the requisite number of prisoners of war, the triumphator offered sacrifice to Jupiter and then dismissed his troops. The day concluded with feasts throughout the city (usually at the triumphator's expense) to which virtually every citizen was invited.

He was only a slave. (if you remember or havewatched the movie , this is what Judah ben Hur did when he saved the general's life and then was told that he had won the battle against a grave enemy of the Roman Empire) The slave would whisper in the ear "Remember you are mortal"(loose
translation)to avooid the general from trying to take on the immortality that belonged to the emperor alone and therefore it was meant as an act of humility and to keep his proper place in the general scheme of things
