Hi All

I have recently joined ebay as a completley new user and i am confused, i have an item for sale on there at the mo, a Nokia N80 mobile phone on the 3 network and have had 2 e-mails to my yahoo account, both from different people, they want to buy the phone but privately like and not through ebay. both say that when i agree to sell to them they want me to end the auction but are they just taking me for a ride or do you think they are serious? Has this happened to anyone else?

Please advise!

I would totally ignore them,if you carry these transactions out, even if they do go smoothly you could be kicked off ebay as it is against ebay rules.Be careful,i wouldnt go there at all.

Usually messages like this are people trying to get a better deal. They see you're a newbie and think that if they put in a really low offer that's higher than your auction has gone, you'll be so relieved at more money you'll sell.

Of course, phones sell for ridiculous sums on eBay, and the selling price usually doubles in the last five minutes of the auction. Never take an early offer on a phone, because you will get *much* more through an auction.

Had it happen a few times - to be honest they are normally time wasters and have no intention of buying from you - if you still have the emails - report them to eBay - it is one of the 'no, no's' -

They may also be scam merchants - just leave it on there and see what happens.

There are a lot of timewasters on eBay at the moment - if you want to sell to them off EBAY - fine - but make sure you get the dosh upfront - if they offer cheque - refuse to despatch until cheque clears - if you do that though - you have no comeback at all if the cheque bounces or they don't pay up.

Pretty sure this is a scam. Had many of these emails on previous ocassions.

Usually what they do is pay via an "unsafe" method i.e money transfer, western union, stolen credit card....wait until you send them the item and then claim the money back from you.

The best thing would be to delete all emails like this and only accept payments through trusted means i.e paypal which is safe and secure and protects you.

Have you checked their feedback? It is possible that they are legit. It is against the rules to sell things outside of eBay, and you will still wind up paying the fee since the auction didn't finish. Just arrange for PayPal up front, and only take the item off if they cough up the money.

Only deal via eBay. And DON'T ship your phone until you have the actual money on your PayPal account or in your hands. Physically check www.paypal.com to see if the money is there because there are scammers that fake PayPal e-mails. PayPal e-mails always call you by your name.

best thing you can do, is ignore the messages, im an ebayer and just ignore whoever is bugging me and they give up. NEVER DO BUISNESS OUT OF EBAY! even if they are not dodgy, you always get caught out!
p.s also watch out for chinese man advertising his own site, claiming to be cheaper, it is a real site but its A COMPLETE RIP OFF!, you'll know its him as he never sells anything.

Are they asking you to send the phone to Nigeria, the Netherlands or the far East?
If they are, it is a well-known scam and you will get ripped off - steer clear!

I would think that is kind of shady. You get security selling it through e-bay because of paypal and insurance. I would tell them no.
