i have a late 80's cub cadet and it had a 12.5 hp kohler command engine in it, it has the vertical shaft, i was wondering if i have to put that same engine in there or if i could get a different brand like briggs and stratton or even go up a hp or 2.

If it will bolt on and the output shaft is the same diameter and length it should work fine.

That is an easy thing to do. The bolt pattern will be the same and the shaft sizes are also as long as you stay in that hp range. The main thing is the shaft size.

You may need to drill some new holes for mounting (and plug the old ones) and perhaps use some shims if the new shaft is longer but it can be done. About the only thing you cannot do is install larger blades.
