Does it belong to the American people?

The gold is kept in the gold reserves and it does not belong to the American people. It use to, but a law was passed making it illegal to own more than a certain amount of gold. Since 1975 Americans can buy and trade gold, but the gold in the treasury belongs to the US treasury department and not to the people.

The Gold Reserves are located throughout the US, the most famous is Ft. Knox, but it is not the only one.

There's still quite a bit at Ft Knox, but there is much more at various federal reserve banks in NY (the Wall St. area). Almost every federal reserve bank keeps a certain amount of gold. It does not belong to the American people.
