For the US, it was to keep all of Vietnam from becoming Communist, without upsetting The PRC (People's Republic of China) or USSR to the point of intervening directly and causing a general war.

For North Vietnam, it was to unite Vietnam under one regime--theirs.

For the USSR and the PRC, to further the aims of global Communism.

For South Vietnam, to keep in power. (Remember, the South's government was a repressive dictatorship--just not a Communist one).

If you mean why did the U.S. go to war, a large part of the reason was plain arrogance - we felt sure we could go into a foreign country, without learning any of its history or culture, and show them the benefits of democracy, at the point of a gun if necessary. Sounds a lot like Iraq, doesn't it?
