I really don't think you have to worry about shelf life. I mean if the label is in old English typing and it has a date of 1894 I would not buy it. But other than that you should be okay. Remember certain oils are better than others also. You get what you pay for.

I don't think there is a real shelf life for motor oil. Now depending on the brand it could be possible that over a VERY VERY long time period some additives (if any added) may settle and the container may need to be shaken. (IE like paint) I think you'd need to stock up on an incredible amount to ever have such a concern. Typical vehicle uses say 4 to 5 quarts lets use 4. Oil changes minimum probably 2 per year. So that's a gallon a year minimum. A case carries 1 and half gallons. Avg life someone keeps a car is say 5 -6 years. Say 6years that's 4 cases minimum per car for its life. Time to settle if that's even possible 20-50 years? This is based on oil that is sealed not open to air.

motor oil will last for several years no problem there is a reason they use plastic containers when you put motor oil in a vehicle the metals in the vehicle will contaminate the oil eventually. That is just how the process works any time you have many different types of metal and you heat it up and cool it down they will end up with itiny particles in the oil. The filter helps up to a point but heat and time eventually take thier toll and you must change motor oil once in a while . If it sits in a cool place and is not opened it will be fine and last a long time.

Motor oil does have a shelf life of 2-5 yrs. The additive and detergent package breaks down over that time. What most people do not realize is that engine oil is made out of what the refineries can't throw out on the ground. It's leftover waste material. They add detergents and other stuff to it to make it useable (most of it barely). Good luck.

I have some 10 year old quarts of oil that have never been opened. So I've been using them up in my older cars by adding one quart of Mobil One Synthetic oil to them when I do an oil change. There did seem to be an inconsistency in the look of the oil near the bottom of the container. So I hope it gets mixed up good when it heats up in the crankcase. Next time I'll shake the containers. Not knowing for sure if there's any problem with the old oil, I buy new oil for my newer cars (Mobil One synthetic). Of course the standards oil meets for new cars has been updated from oil purchased 10 years ago, so you couldn't use that oil in a new car anyways.

Motor oil has no shelf life. If the container is unopened, you're fine.
