Has anyone read this Astonishing the Gods? I just finished it and am considering choosing it for my English individual study alongside 'One Hundred Years of Solitude' by Marquez. Could anyone give me any ideas, thoughts, comments or anything else that springs to mind? I was thinking about connecting the two texts by how the books reflect the political and social history of the authors' backgrounds, but I don't know much about the political history of Latin America and Africa. Could anyone help? Thanks! :)

Also, if you have any other thoughts on the books,

i.e. purpose, similarities, differences, characters, themes, political allusions/references, symbols, personal thoughts....

If you do not know much about the history of Latin American (Marquez was born in Columbia I believe and he lived most of his life in Mexico) or Africa why do you think you can connect that to the stories. I do not think the soldiers in One Hundred Years of Solitude could be connected to a particular war, I think they are more just a representative of the fighting spirit of the people. If you really want to write about this topic you need to start by looking into the history of the period to see if you can find connections.
