Yeah you are right there are a lot of good people here in the United States that could serve in the military, but we have what is called a professional military rather than a conscript military. The difference is the fact that people volunteer to go into the military for whatever reason - college wasn't right for them, they are getting money to go to college, they believe in doing something for their country, ect.... there are many, many more reasons. People make it their careers.

A conscript military means most of the people within the military serve because it is mandatory. These armies are usually less well trained, although in many cases they can still be fairly decent militaries. The Soviet Union had a conscript military, and I believe Germany today may have a limited conscript military. I think it is also closely related to funding for higher education.

At the moment there is no need for the United States to have a conscript military, or a draft for that matter (when people are forced to go to war like in Vietnam or World War II). The U.S. military can currently fight a war on a limited scale on three fronts (three different places) without having a draft. So Afghanistan would be one front, Iraq the second, who knows what/when/if the third will occur. Lets hope it doesn't. If it does, a draft may become mandatory.

To answer your question in short, plenty of people are in the military. Not only do we have our professional soldiers, but we also have the reserves and national guard. There is no shortage of U.S. soldiers. If there was, we'd see the draft again.

Whats your question?

I think I know what you are saying. The only solution to defence in a low population country would either be a militia or you could try the Israeli model. Everybody does national service. The military equipment is kept at designated sites. When you need to mobilize, the trained populus goes to designated points, collects arms and goes to front.

Hope this helps

Luck
