My computer doesn't shutdown within the normal 30 second time span. I usually have to close all my programs manually, including those in the system tray, especially ITUNES, before it considers turning off.

Any particular reason for this? I'm afraid I have spyware on my computer but nothing is coming up with my viral searches.

Two things to try. First defrag the hard drive. A badly fragmented drive can cause it to hang. That's the easy one.

If that does not work, then you have a program that is not shutting down. You may need to play detective and try manually shutting down different programs before doing the shut down until you can determine which program is at fault. You may need to delete and reinstall that program.

Shut down issues are rarely caused by viruses or spyware.

My PC will do that too, especially if an unresponsive program is still running. I usually have no choice but to hit and hold down the physical power button on the front of my PC. Boo Microsoft!

Edit: Chaitu is right, you don't have a virus.

Hi,

I don't think you have a virus, relax. From the way you describe the problem, I think its just incompatible programs not allowing the shut down process to take place.

Problem is there are so many factors which may be affecting your shut down process. Here is a wonderful guide that should help you identify the problem and fix it.

Before you go into too much trouble....check how many things are running on your task bar.....it does take time to shut a lot of things down......
