Whether you actually bought the shares or not, the procedure is same. Assume that you had some amount on a given date and you bought x, y and z numbers of the companies a, b and c. So your total investment is x times the price of a, y times the price of b and z times the price of c.

Ignore the cost of the transaction and the brokerage for the time being though in real life you cannot do that. Assume that the closing price of the share of each company is the price of your purchase and similarly will be the price at which you can sell the shares in theory.

So, the value of your portfolio on each day the market is open will be again x times the price of a + y times the price of b + z times the price of c. As mentioned, take the closing price of the share.

The portfolio can be tracked that way for weeks, months and years. You can theoretically sell a and buy d etc. and see how the portfolio performs.
