I didn't word this one to well; it is in Arts & Humanities. I meant the metaphorical slumber of society in general - the lack of spirit, apathy, blind acceptance of continual injustice to minorities, etc. Should we shake them awake with words or deeds that really shock them?

If you're talking about something like 9/11 or the Kennedy assassinations, perhaps. You do mean a "wake-up call?"

Often it backfires, though.

Look at the recent school massacres, for example. Lots of shock for a day or so, then back to normal.

There are some lines that Kevin Spacey has in "Seven," which though disturbing, are so true that we as viewers, and not solely of movies, but of the 'whole humanity thing' would do well to try to keep in perspective with reference to our own daily lives. The thing is, how do we, with the frenzy of what is offered as 'news,' not allow ourselves to become desensitized, yet simultaneously not become cowering nervous wrecks?

If its necessary and important enough i think its sometimes the only way. Only if its to improve the situation for the majority rather than minority. Never a good idea if its for the wrong reasons though.

I think it's quite traumatic and unsettleing, if you want to try rouse someone from their sleep, do it gently. If all else fails try using bright light or give them a bit of a shake.

I suppose it depends on who these people are...and whether or not you live in the same house. In the short term, it would probably be pretty damned funny (assuming you're not speaking of electrocution??), but there would be retaliation.

No, take them a warm drink, a nice biscuit, and croon softly to them (mind you, your singing might have the affect of shocking them.....just stick to the drink and biscuit)
