I have a Toshiba laptop and am getting BT Broadband put onto my phone line in a couple of weeks. I am rubbish at all this sort of stuff and just want to check that I don't need to get any more cables, modems etc before I can get connected. My laptop claims to have an internal modem so I don't think I need the free one BT offer me. Any advice?

You are probably getting ADSL broadband. So you'll need the BT modem. the one in your laptop is a 56K dial up modem. That means it 56,000 bits per second. Broadband is over 2 million bits per second and up to 8 million! The modem will plug in your USB port and a cable from the modem will go to a micro filter. Make sure you also plug you phone in to the micro filter too. All phones in your house will need to go through micro filters. BT should do all this for you - they charge enough! You laptop probably has built in wireless - so you could consider a wireless router/modem - it gives you more freedom - surf the net lying in bed! lol Make sure you get all the information you need on set up from BT from the start - that includes settings for email using Outlook Express or Outllook and settings for webspace and check if you have a monthly download limit.

Yes - the internal modem on your laptop is probably for dialup and that isn't any good so what you need on your laptop is either a network connection or wireless networking. BT will supply you with all the cables you need provided that you have one or other of the above.

If you are not sure how to tell if you have these try checking the manual or repost with that question.

If you have neither of those but you do have USB 2.0 then you can get a wireless USB 2.0 adapter e.g.

The modem (dial up) in your PC is not the same as the one (cable) BT is sending.

All extras should be included with the cable modem.
